Scripture for Today

They that hope in the LORD will renew their strength,
they will soar as with eagles’ wings;
They will run and not grow weary,
walk and not grow faint.
Isaiah 40: 31

This is the mid-point of our Advent waiting and always, for me, the hardest part of waiting.  The excitement of the first news has worn off and the actual event has yet to come so we are in the middle of our waiting. This is when I start to have doubts about whether whatever I am waiting for will ever happen.  I start off with such hope and enthusiasm but, then, as I sit to wait, I wonder, “Did I get it wrong?”  “Did others get it wrong?”  “Is it really worth waiting for?”  “Is there something else I should be doing while I wait?” and “Maybe I should just go do it instead of wait!”  It’s that last one that I have battled my whole life.  For those familiar with theCamino40 Enneagram, I am a Four and one of the wonderful traits of a Four is that we LOVE to start new things but are not so good at finishing.  We are like the dog in the movie “UP”.  Completely focused until we see a “SQUIRREL”!  So waiting is a challenge for me and I get antsy and restless.  And this is where the passage above speaks to me, as well as the Gospel of Matthew, as Jesus urges us to rest in Him. This is not about physical but spiritual rest, which includes a large dose of trust. Trust that I do not have to do it all because I am part of something bigger than I can ever do alone.  Trust that my part will become clear if I can sit and wait for God to give me guidance, direction and energy to move.  For waiting and trust are part of the journey with God.  For those of us who love to move and start anew and bounce from task to task, the discipline of waiting is a chore and a gift.  And an exercise in trust in God.  This Advent, we are awaiting the promise of the Christ-child. But whatever that event means to you, may you hold fast to the promise that God give us – it is worth the wait. Amen.

–Cindy Kennedy

Give us faith to live joyfully, sustained by your promises as we eagerly await the day when they will be fulfilled for all the world to see, through the coming of your Son, Jesus Christ.
Amen.
